Middle-eastern Chaos: Russia

Russia: what are you doing?

  1. Airplane blown up after takeoff from Sinai bound for St. Petersburg. Everyone (mostly Russian tourists) were killed.
  2. ISIS claimed responsibility and Russia vowed revenge.
  3. Russia continues to bomb targets in Syria/Iraq. However, they are focusing on Syrian rebels with very little effort against ISIS.
  4. They support Assad, so the rebel bombing is understandable.
  5. But C’mon, ISIS committed a tremendous action against the Russian state. It’d hard to believe that pressure from the Russian people and national pride has not spurred Putin to be more forceful.

Time will tell

Notre Dame

Great start for the Irish as they roll over Texas.

Tough schedule looms ahead, however.

They have some exciting players and a tough offensive line.

Could be a fun season.

Greeks Bearing Losses

Beware of Greeks bearing losses.

The current economic disaster playing out in Greece is pretty much beyond comprehension for me. However:

1. The Greek economy could collapse (depression) with implications beyond Greece (interdependence).

2. If the Greeks get a break, will other teetering countries follow suit? (Italy, Spain, et.al.)

3. Does the Eurozone make sense? Have a future? The UK is talking about an exit.

4. The Russian bear looms large as a potential player/spoiler in this strategic area (eastern Med.).

5. In any event, everything should hit the fan shortly and we’ll probably see a new structure (radical change or incremental?)

6. Has Europe ever been able to get along for the greater good on just selfish?

The 61 Second Minute

Today scientists are resetting the atomic clock by adding one second…a leap second.

This action is necessary to allow for the slowing rotation of the Earth and keep time on time.

I wonder if I should reset my watch…how do I add a second?

Forget it. I’m not into time anyway!

Summer Solstice – Honoring the light

On light versus dark:

Marty says to Rust: “When I look up at the star-studded sky, it appears to me that dark has a lot more territory than light.”

Rust replies: “You’re right about that, but you’re looking at the wrong sky thing”

Marty: “How’s that?”

Rust: “Well, once there was only dark. You ask me, the light’s winning.”

(paraphrased from the last words of True Detective).

Celebrate!

This is the start of summer and we celebrate the wonder of our connection to the Sun and Earth…the Divine Connection.

There is much to celebrate and honor:

The incredible bounty of Earth reflecting the sun’s power to provide abundance and nourishment, from tiny seeds.

The Sun–the source of life–nurturing and teaching it’s children.

Divine Connection:

This connection expands and brightens our life as it reminds us of the wonder that lies in  loving and honoring this relationship.

This complex connection reveals the powerful bond of alignment. and gives a glimpse of peak moments of growth, warmth and comfort.

We are inspired by the growth…manifested in the spiritual, physical, and love for fellow travelers.

The warmth of hot days signify the importance of balance between intensity and relaxation.

The fruit of growth requires patience to ripen and like green seeds, can’t be be rushed to fullness.

We feel the excitement of growth from seeds and the realization that we are part of the process that leads to enlightenment:

Trail Blazing

ALT Glreenway

Pushing the limit.

Pushing my body into the unknown with the assistance of my new forefoot striking Newton shoes…not knowing what to expect.

I’ve never heard of Newtons, and they were expensive. But they give me a bounce as my forefoot rebounds off the “lugs” in the front of the shoe.

Longest run in six months, and 25% longer than my previous longest. I’m talking six miles versus four. This would not be a big deal twenty years ago, but as I approach seventy years old, it seems overwhelming…and it may be.

Aquidneck Land Trust (ALT) trails all the way…running the Sakonnet Greenway. Trails are my forte now. I love the varied paths, lack of vehicles, the sounds of nature and striking views.

Starting at the massive sports complex of the Glen…soccer and baseball fields abound, accompanied by the meticulously groomed enormous Polo field.

Firing up my iPod and off at a slow-pace into the wooded path behind Pennfield School toward Sandy Point Ave…about half a mile.

Crossing Sandy Point to cow pastures inhabited by Big Brown cows wearing ear tags and protected by an electric fence.

Feeling good… edging around the pasture, music blasting….Stones: “Brown Sugar” lighting up my psyche.

Crossing a dry creek to Vacluse Farm. Sign: “no horses beyond this point.”

Transitioning  from pasture to woods. Trees glowing–infused with brilliant sunlight. Bright green leaves dancing–reflecting the noon sun. Sunglasses off to enjoying the vividness.

The path feels challenging. Gotta watch the complex of roots and rocks.. leaping, twisting and jumping with joy, negotiating the obstacles…music turned off so I can inhale the sounds and sights of the forest…birds, breeze and wonder.

The path feels welcoming…periodically padded with leaves and pine needles.

Transitioning to semi wetlands but  mostly dry now. Big leaves like lily pads.

On to a boardwalk over the wetlands and still under the sparkling canopy.

Sprinting out of the woods to more pasture, electric fences, and cows staring impassively as I go by…their attention focusing on chewing grass, and an occaisional glance of relative boredom.

Feeling good…breathing smoothly, knees good, but metatarsals hurting as always.

Trail narrowing between a long row of trees. Its loaded with branches that snake back, forth and across, commanding my complete attention.

Braman’s Lane looming ahead and open spaces…back to music.

Cover gone, sun bearing down drawing lots of sweat. Crossing the road, heading for the golf course and semi shade.

Turning onto the forested golf course trail…about 1.75 miles so far. Starting to feel the run. and I’m nowhere near half way. Holding an almost exact 15 minute pace. So that’s good.

Golf course provides some needed shade. Resisting the desire to look for balls staying the course.

Leaden legs and screaming metatarsals…par for the course as forefoot striking takes its toll.

Passing knots of golfers as they slice and hook some gems into the briar infested woods.

Harlow Pond on the left, bringing nostalgia, sadness and beauty.

Over the Little Creek bridge and nearing the end of the golf leg (3.75 miles) at Mitchells Lane.

Everything hurts…this is where I usually stop.

Not today.

Crossing the road to the new circuit with its cornfields, woods and a confusing myriad of trails….I inevitably get lost every time I run this area.

This time its better. Managing to stay on the official trail which (in many places) is layered with mulch and even gravel. The trek through the woods is particularly rewarding with all sorts of trees, bushes and little side paths.

The plan is to cut across the middle of the trail complex and end the run after doing the Albro woods loop.

Really struggling at this point…wishing I brought some water.

Emerging from the woods, noting that many of the corn fields are plowed. No stalks yet…visibility is good.

Taking the “green” trail toward the deep dark Albro woods with its convoluted system of  branches and roots snaking across the trail…strategically placed for a stubbed toe or a crash. I’ve done both before and its no fun.

Finishing the loop with burning feet, sore knees and general exhaustion, and guess what? I have to run the loop  again.

Unfortunately, the loop was not long enough. I’m only at about 5 miles. Gross miscalculation!

I just want it to end. Please!

But no,  I have to run the loop again!

Albro is so confusing with forks to nowhere and pesky disorientation under the big trees.

Anyway, I’m doing the loop twice to add distance…aggravating and discouraging in my exhausted state.

But no matter.

Finished another loop and check my iPod distance “app”…still not enough. After two loops!!

Gotta do a little back and forth after Albro to get the right distance.

Finally ducking out of the forest and seeing the end ahead.

Seeing Diane and the car at East Main gives me a boost as I stagger to the finish.

Six miles….my pace slipped in the second half and the official mark was 15:46. This was a big decrease from the 15 even during the first half.

But again, no matter.

Went home and slept for two hours.

Music and Running

“Unhand that man,” I said. They laughed , said “no way” as I flew past — challenging the waves and chasing them back to the sea, only to be chased back to shore when they come back. I wonder if they’re having as much fun as me.

Music & Running — magic combination. Especially if you’re on the beach.

Tax Season Meets Ground Hog Day

Some tax seasons are better than others (much better) and some are disasters. It’s all relative because none are smooth. They’re all difficult…mentally and physically. This year’s is near total overwhelming chaos.

The New Terrorists

I still don’t understand how they are getting away with it, but a handful of arrogant and cynical legislators have managed to hijack the USA. And I’m talking about the entire USA and everyone in it. The rest of the world will follow.

These self-righteous traitors are trying  to make President Obama look as bad as possible, and they don’t care if they destroy the USA in the process. They have shut down the government and threaten to refuse to pay debts that we (actually Congress) have already incurred.

The idea of “majority rules”as envisioned by our Founding Fathers is the bedrock of our legislative system, and it is being mocked by this group of terrorists. I thought the process was that If you don’t like a law (like the Affordable Health Act) you get elected, introduce a bill, get it passed, and override any veto that may come. This is the American Constitutional method.

Theses terrorists are threatening the democratic way we govern ourselves. I call them terrorists since the havoc and destruction they can (and have) wreak if carried out fully, will destroy our economy, demoralize our people, increase our deficit. The entire litany is too long for this letter, but I hope you get the idea. If you want a complete description of the catastrophic results of the debt ceiling issue got to  http://www.treasury.gov/initiatives/Documents/POTENTIAL MACROECONOMIC IMPACT OF DEBT CEILING BRINKMANSHIP   . The disaster is far reaching and ranges from world-wide depression, cancellation of Social Security payments to the destabilizing effect from of faith in U.S. Treasuries as the the only risk-free asset in the world.

Hostage holding and threatening to destroy is what terrorists do. And unfortunately that is what faces us now.

We must deal with it strongly and boldly. Leaders who understand and care must rise and take action.

Winter of our discontent

It won’t quit. Go away please; we are sick and tired of you.

The March sun is getting higher in the sky. It’s supposed to be warming up; not 18 degrees like it was this morning.

It’s cutting into my running, but not stopping me.

I actually a lonely green shoot amidst the snow on Cliff Walk.
